For sprayed texture, Juan mixes the material to the right consistency and sprays it on with a hopper gun, building up the pattern in several passes depending on how heavy the texture needs to be. Hand-applied texture is worked in with a trowel, brush, or other hand tool to create patterns spray alone cannot match. On repairs and additions, he studies the existing texture first — how coarse it is, how it was applied — before matching it on the new section, so the old and new surfaces read as one wall once it is painted.
